You might know your car’s registration number by heart, but remembering when its insurance expires is not easy. Perhaps the policy document is buried in your emails, or you are checking a used car and want to know whether its insurance is still valid.
An insurance check by vehicle number can help you trace available policy information without starting with the policy number. However, the four official digital routes do not work in the same way. Some are better for checking validity, while others are more useful for finding policy records or accessing an issued document.
4 Official Ways to Check Car Insurance Using Vehicle Details
Before starting, keep the vehicle registration number exactly as it appears on the Registration Certificate (RC). You may also need a mobile number, login details, or other information depending on the platform.
Use VAHAN When You Mainly Need the Insurance Validity Date
VAHAN is usually the most direct starting point when you have the registration number and want to check the vehicle’s recorded insurance status.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ vehicle-information service allows users to search vehicle details using the registration number. Available records can include insurance information along with other registration details. To run an insurance check by vehicle number:
Open the official Parivahan or VAHAN vehicle-details service.
Select the option to view or know vehicle details.
Sign in or complete the requested verification.
Enter the registration number accurately.
Review the available vehicle and insurance information.
VAHAN is particularly useful when your main question is whether the transport record shows insurance as currently valid, and when that recorded validity ends?
It should not be treated as a substitute for reading your complete policy document. Details such as add-ons, exclusions, deductibles, and exact coverage conditions belong in the policy issued by your insurer.
2. Use mParivahan When You Want the Same Check on Your Phone
mParivahan is useful when you need vehicle information while travelling or prefer checking through a mobile application.
The app connects vehicle registration information with digital transport records. Insurance details reflected in the transport database may therefore be available alongside the vehicle’s RC information. The process generally involves:
Downloading the official mParivahan application.
Signing in using your mobile number.
Searching for the vehicle using its registration number.
Opening the available vehicle record.
Reviewing the displayed insurance validity details.
This method serves much the same immediate need as VAHAN, but in a mobile-friendly format.
It also has practical value during roadside document checks. Government guidance recognises electronic transport records available through mParivahan, and insurance information recorded in the VAHAN system can be reflected through the application.
For a quick mobile insurance check by vehicle number, mParivahan is therefore a useful alternative to opening the VAHAN website.
3. Use IIB When You Need to Trace Insurance Information After an Accident
The Insurance Information Bureau of India, or IIB, serves a somewhat different purpose.
Its motor insurance services have historically included vehicle insurance information retrieval for members of the public, insurers, and authorities. This can be useful when insurance details of a vehicle need to be traced, particularly following an accident.
Depending on the available service and records, you may be asked for information such as:
Vehicle Registration Number
Your Name and Contact Details
Accident-related Information
Other Identifying Details Requested by the Portal
This makes IIB different from a simple VAHAN validity search.
If you are checking your own car before renewal, VAHAN or mParivahan will usually be the more straightforward starting point. IIB becomes more relevant when the task is to identify available insurance information connected with a vehicle involved in an incident.
An insurance check by vehicle number through IIB should also be treated as a database search rather than proof of every term contained in the policy.
4. Use DigiLocker When You Need the Actual Digital Policy Document
DigiLocker is often grouped with vehicle-insurance status tools, but it works differently.
It is primarily a secure digital document platform. IRDAI has advised insurers to enable policyholders to preserve digital insurance policies through DigiLocker. This means it can be useful when the policy document has been issued digitally and made available through an integrated insurer.
After signing in to DigiLocker, you can:
Check your issued documents.
Search for available documents from connected issuers.
Retrieve the relevant insurance record when supported.
Open the issued policy to check its policy number, insurer, coverage period, and other terms.
DigiLocker is not simply a public registration-number lookup tool like VAHAN. You may need the policy to be linked to your account or additional information to retrieve it.
Use it when your goal is to access or preserve the official digital policy document rather than only confirm an expiry date.
What If The Online Record Does Not Match Your Policy?
A missing or outdated online record does not automatically mean that you have no insurance.
For example, you may have renewed the policy recently, but the updated information may not yet appear consistently across every connected system. You may also have entered the registration number incorrectly.
If the result looks wrong:
Check the Registration Number Again: Match it against the RC rather than relying on memory.
Open the Policy Issued by the Insurer: Confirm its policy number and start and end dates.
Check Another Official Source: If VAHAN does not show the expected record, try mParivahan or the relevant available service.
Contact the Insurer: Ask them to confirm that the policy is active and that the correct vehicle registration number is recorded.
Do Not Rely on an Old Expiry Date: If the policy has genuinely expired, arrange renewal before driving the vehicle.
This is particularly important after a recent renewal. Treat the insurer-issued policy as the document for checking the actual terms of your cover while the database record is being verified.
An insurance check by vehicle number is useful because you do not always need to know the policy number before starting. However, the best method depends on the information you need.
If the policy is close to expiry or has already lapsed, online insurance brokers such as Jio Insurance Broking Ltd. can also help you explore available renewal options. First, confirm the status, then act on the record you find.
