The Delhi High Court on Friday refused to grant interim bail to Popular Front of India (PFI) Chairman OMA Salam, who sought two-week relief on account of his daughter’s death.
The Division Bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh and Justice Amit Sharma noted that it could not enlarge Salam on bail since he was an influential person and had the potential to influence the witnesses.
The counsel arguing for Salam contended that the petitioner wanted to be with his family in this hour of grief. The lawyer further submitted that Salam’s daughter passed away in April and his wife was now in a ‘depressive’ state.
Earlier, the trial court had rejected his plea for interim bail.
Salam was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) during a massive crackdown on the banned organisation in 2022. He was booked under the stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
The national agency alleged that PFI, its officer bearers and members, hatched a criminal conspiracy to raise funds for committing acts of terror in various parts of the country and were conducting training camps to indoctrinate and train their cadres for this purpose.
On September 28, 2022, the Government of India banned PFI and several of its associate organisations for five years under UAPA, accusing them of having links with global terror groups, such as ISIS.
