National Green Tribunal disposes of application on Delhi Gokulpur factory blast

08/11/2024BlogNo Comments

The National Green Tribunal’s Principal Bench in New Delhi has disposed of the Original Application related to a factory blast in Delhi’s Gokulpur Village that killed two workers and injured two others.

The tribunal, comprising Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi, and Expert Member Dr A. Senthil Vel, directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to recover environmental compensation (EC) of Rs 24,75,000 from the factory owners.

The blast occurred due to the explosion of a compressor at a plastic molding factory operating in a non-conforming residential area without necessary permits.

The tribunal applied its earlier judgment in Original Application 2021, directing compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh to those with minor injuries.

The District Magistrate, North East Delhi, reported that compensation had already been paid to the families of the deceased and injured.

However, the injured was found to be the owner of the second unit operating illegally and thus ineligible for compensation.

The tribunal ordered the distribution of the EC amount, with Rs 11 lakh each to the legal heirs of the deceased and Rs 2,75,000 to injured Sahil.
