The Supreme Court on Monday sought responses from the Maharashtra and Haryana governments on stand-up comedian Pranit More’s plea seeking the clubbing of two FIRs registered against him over the Rs 370 biryani comment controversy.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana issued notice on More’s plea seeking to club the FIR registered in Gurugram with an earlier FIR registered in Maharashtra.
Requesting a single consolidated proceeding, More counsel submitted that both FIRs originate from the same underlying incident.
The case relates to a viral video from one of More’s stand-up shows in Gurugram, where an audience member, Himanshu Jangra, spoke about spending Rs 370 on biryani during a date and suggested that he expected something in return from the woman.
The exchange, in which More participated as the host, drew widespread criticism after the video was circulated online.
The Maharashtra Cyber Police subsequently registered an FIR against More and others over the allegedly objectionable content, while the Gurugram Police later registered a separate FIR on a complaint by the National Commission for Women (NCW).
The NCW also summoned More and Jangra over the remarks concerning consent and sexual conduct.
More later publicly apologised for failing to object to the remarks during the show.
Informing the court that Pranit More has already apologized to the NCW and other bodies his lawyer affirmed that More acknowledges the situation’s gravity and is ready for trial. He stressed that More plea is only aimed at merging the separate FIRs.
Counsel further submitted that More had deleted the viral video after becoming aware of the seriousness of the controversy.
The Supreme Court, taking note of the submissions, issued notice to the concerned authorities on More’s plea seeking clubbing of the two FIRs.
