The Punjab and Haryana High Court has recently dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Meena Tribal Welfare Association, Chandigarh, essentially raising a service dispute related to the service conditions of Union Territory employees.
The petitioner prayed for several reliefs, including the quashing of certain letters and notifications issued by the respondent administration, and the implementation of the Service Rules of UT Employees, 2022.
However, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal observed that the grievance raised by the petitioner was essentially personal in nature and related to service conditions.
Citing established legal precedent, the Court held that service disputes cannot be raised through public interest litigations.
Consequently, the petition was dismissed as not maintainable.
