The Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant anticipatory bail to Member of Parliament PV Midhun Reddy, accused in a multi-crore liquor scam in Andhra Pradesh.
The Bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan upheld Andhra Pradesh High Court verdict of July 16, which denied anticipatory bail to the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party leader in the case.
The Apex Court passed the order on the grounds of seriousness of charges and the need for custodial interrogation of the accused by state authorities.
Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing the State of Andhra Pradesh, said that in May 2025, the Bench had refused to grant anticipatory bail to other co-accused P Krishna Mohan Reddy and K Dhananjaya, who served as secretary and OSD, respectively, in the office of ex-CM Jagan Mohan Reddy during the previous YSRCP regime.
The top court of the country had dismissed their bail petitions following the submission of the Andhra Pradesh government that since the investigation was at a critical juncture, granting anticipatory bail might cause prejudice to the State’s case, he recalled.
Rohatgi further submitted that the accused, who were public servants, conspired to throttle the competitions and the normal distribution channels of liquor were given to only a particular group. The case apparently went to the Competition Commission of India, where it was eventually closed, he added.
