Taking suo motu cognisance of repeated incidents of stray dog bites leading to rabies and deaths, the Supreme Court on Monday ordered initiation of a writ petition on the issue.
The Bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan took suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report published in The Times of India titled ‘City hounded by strays and kids pay price’. As per the report, the elderly and children were the most affected by rabies from dog bite incidents.
Terming it a highly disturbing news report, which contained extremely troubling details, the Apex Court noted that hundreds of dog bite incidents wre reported from both cities and peripheral areas, many of which have led to rabies infections.
Noting that the infants and senior citizens were ultimately falling prey to the deadly disease, the Bench directed that the matter be placed before Chief Justice of India BR Gavai for appropriate directions.
