The Gujarat High Court has been approached by a man from Ahmedabad seeking divorce from his wife, alleging that her excessive attachment to stray dogs made their marriage unbearable.
According to the petitioner, the couple married in 2006, but their relationship began to deteriorate when his wife started bringing stray dogs into their apartment. He claimed that despite objections from neighbours and housing society rules, she continued to shelter several dogs inside their home, forcing him to care for them and tolerate constant disturbance.
In his plea, the husband alleged that one of the dogs often occupied their bed and once bit him when he tried to move it. He further stated that the continuous stress from the situation affected his mental and physical health, leading to serious personal issues.
The petitioner also accused his wife of publicly humiliating him by arranging a prank radio call that implied he was having an affair. He said the incident caused him emotional distress and embarrassment.
A family court had earlier dismissed his divorce petition in February 2024, ruling that his claims did not amount to cruelty under law. The husband has now challenged that decision before the Gujarat High Court, which is scheduled to hear the case on December 1.
The wife has denied all allegations, maintaining that her husband himself was associated with an animal welfare trust and that the dogs were initially brought home by him.
