Justice Surya Kant officially took charge as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, receiving the oath of office from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, top judges, legal dignitaries, and international guests from several countries.
Justice Surya Kant was born in 1962, Justice Kant was appointed Advocate General of Haryana in 2000, becoming the youngest person to hold the post. He was elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004. In October 2018, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India in May 2019. He will demit office on February 9, 2027.
Over the years, Justice Kant has been associated with several significant rulings, including matters related to the abrogation of Article 370, the Pegasus surveillance issue, and electoral reforms. He has also contributed to advancing gender representation in legal bodies, supporting measures such as increased participation of women in bar associations.
Known for his composed and pragmatic approach, he has emphasized that his judicial decisions are grounded strictly in facts and law, rather than public pressure or online discourse.
As he begins his term, Justice Surya Kant is expected to prioritize judicial efficiency, reduction of case backlogs, and improved access to justice continuing the reform-oriented trajectory of the Supreme Court.
