In a landmark judgment that brings a major chapter of Kerala’s most sensational crime case to a close, the Ernakulam Principal District and Sessions Court has acquitted Malayalam actor Dileep in connection with the 2017 abduction and sexual assault of a prominent actress. The verdict, delivered after years of intense investigation, courtroom battles, and widespread public debate, marks a pivotal turn in the high-profile case that shook the Malayalam film industry.
The court ruled that the prosecution failed to present evidence strong enough to prove that Dileep had conspired to orchestrate the attack. Throughout the lengthy trial, Dileep had consistently denied the allegations, claiming he was being framed. With the court dismissing the conspiracy theory due to insufficient proof, the actor has now been exonerated of all charges.
While Dileep walked free, the court found six individuals guilty of carrying out the brutal crime. Among them is the prime accused, Pulsar Suni (Sunil N.S.), who was identified as the mastermind behind the physical attack. These six were convicted for a range of serious offenses, including:
The 2017 incident captivated national attention, as the survivor—an acclaimed actress—came forward bravely, leading to massive support from across the film fraternity and civil society. The case sparked rallies, film-industry reforms, and discussions about workplace safety, gender power dynamics, and the treatment of women in cinema.
For nearly eight years, the Malayalam film industry remained divided, with heated debates surrounding Dileep’s alleged involvement. Numerous actors and activists demanded justice for the survivor while calling for systemic change within the industry.
The case witnessed multiple twists, including claims of missing digital evidence, allegations of evidence tampering, witness retractions, and petitions filed by both prosecution and defense. The trial, which saw close to 300 witnesses, was among the lengthiest and most complex criminal proceedings in the state’s recent history.
In its verdict, the court acknowledged the survivor’s trauma and validated the assault, but made a clear distinction between the actual perpetrators and the failed attempt to link Dileep to the conspiracy. The judgment emphasizes that suspicion alone cannot serve as grounds for conviction.
The convicted six will be sentenced on December 12, when the court will decide the quantum of punishment. Legal experts suggest the sentences could be severe given the gravity of the crimes established.
As for Dileep, the acquittal signals a significant relief after years of public scrutiny. However, reactions from the film industry, civil society, and women’s groups are expected to continue unfolding in the coming days.
