The Supreme Court is examining the possibility of setting up a special court for the trial of grave and serious offences arising from the Delhi-NCR region, with the objective of ensuring faster and more effective delivery of justice. The proposal came up during proceedings where the Court expressed concern over delays in the adjudication of cases involving heinous crimes.
The apex court observed that the high volume and complexity of serious criminal cases in the National Capital Region often place immense pressure on existing trial courts. This, the Court noted, can lead to prolonged trials and extended periods of incarceration, affecting both victims and accused persons.
While deliberating on the issue, the Court highlighted the need for structural reforms within the criminal justice system, including specialised courts equipped to deal exclusively with grave offences. Such a mechanism, it indicated, could help streamline trials, improve case management, and reduce pendency.
The Supreme Court has sought inputs from relevant authorities on the feasibility, jurisdiction, and operational framework of such a dedicated court. It also underlined that any such initiative must align with constitutional principles and existing legal procedures.
The matter remains under consideration, with the Court signalling that a focused judicial approach may be necessary to address the challenges posed by serious crime cases in the Delhi-NCR region.
