Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, formally taking charge as the head of one of the country’s oldest High Courts.

West Bengal Governor R N Ravi administered the oath of office to Justice Ghuge at a ceremony held in Court Room 1, the Chief Justice’s Court. The event was attended by several dignitaries, members of the judiciary, lawyers and other officials.

Among those present at the swearing-in ceremony were Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose.

Justice Ghuge’s elevation marks his assumption of the administrative and judicial responsibilities of the Calcutta High Court at a time when the court continues to deal with a substantial volume of constitutional, civil, criminal and public law litigation.

Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court and has served in various judicial capacities during his tenure. Before being elevated as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, he was serving as a senior judge of the Bombay High Court.

As Chief Justice, Justice Ghuge will head the Calcutta High Court and oversee its administrative functioning, allocation of judicial work and constitution of benches, besides hearing cases assigned to his court.

The appointment of a new Chief Justice comes with the expectation of continued efforts towards improving judicial administration, reducing pendency and ensuring timely disposal of cases.

Justice Ghuge’s formal assumption of office through Wednesday’s oath-taking ceremony now begins his tenure at the Calcutta High Court, where he will also have a key role in guiding the institution’s judicial and administrative affairs.
