The Delhi High Court has issued summons on a suit filed by actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut seeking protection of her personality and privacy rights against the alleged circulation of obscene and pornographic content, including material purportedly generated using artificial intelligence.
Justice Vikas Mahajan also issued notice on Ranaut’s application seeking interim relief in the matter.
Appearing for Ranaut, her counsel submitted that objectionable content depicting the actor had been circulated on social media platforms. The Court was also apprised of allegedly AI-generated material purportedly portraying Ranaut in objectionable circumstances.
Counsel submitted that a fact-checking exercise had established that the images in question were artificially generated and did not correspond to any genuine photograph of the actor.
The Bench sought clarification from Ranaut’s counsel regarding the specific defendants against whom takedown directions were being sought. The Court is expected to consider the request for interim protection after the parties place the relevant details before it.
Ranaut has approached the High Court invoking her personality rights, seeking protection against the unauthorised exploitation of her name, image, likeness and other attributes associated with her identity.
The petition comes against the backdrop of increasing litigation before the Delhi High Court concerning the use of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology to create or circulate misleading, defamatory or sexually explicit material involving public figures.
The High Court has in several recent matters granted protection to celebrities and public personalities against unauthorised use of their identity, including through AI-generated or manipulated content.
The Court has previously dealt with similar claims involving actors, sportspersons, politicians and other public figures, recognising that a person’s name, image, voice, likeness and other distinctive attributes may require protection from unauthorised exploitation.
In one such matter, the Court restrained the unauthorised use and manipulation of personality attributes through technologies including artificial intelligence, generative AI, machine learning and deepfakes.
Ranaut’s suit, titled Kangana Ranaut v. Meta Platforms & Ors., will next come up for hearing in February 2027.
The proceedings are significant as courts increasingly confront the legal challenges posed by AI-generated deepfakes, particularly where such content allegedly invades privacy, damages reputation or falsely associates a public figure with obscene or sexually explicit material.
