The Central government on Saturday notified the appointment of seven judicial officers as judges of the Delhi High Court, following the recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.
Nivedita Anil Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena have been appointed as permanent judges, while Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj have been appointed as additional judges.
Arun Bhardwaj is currently serving as the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court.
The Centre’s notification comes after the Supreme Court Collegium, on September 10, recommended the names of eight judicial officers for appointment to the Delhi High Court.
However, only seven of the eight names recommended by the Collegium have been cleared by the Central government. Gurvinder Pal Singh, whose name was also recommended by the Collegium, does not figure among the appointments notified by the Centre on Saturday.
With these appointments, the Delhi High Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 60 judges, will have 51 judges, leaving nine vacancies. Prior to the appointments, the High Court was functioning with 44 judges against its sanctioned strength.
The Supreme Court Collegium is responsible for recommending candidates for appointment as judges of the High Courts. The recommendations are subsequently processed by the Union government, which issues the formal appointment notification after completing the prescribed procedure.
The Delhi High Court has a sanctioned strength of 60 judges. The appointment of the seven judicial officers is expected to reduce the existing vacancies on the Bench, although one Collegium-recommended name remains pending clearance.
