CJI nominates Justice Surya Kant as Chairperson of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has nominated Supreme Court judge Justice Surya Kant as Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).  

A notification issued on November 12 said that in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, Justice Kant was nominated to the post of SCLSC Chairperson by CJI Khanna.

The legal services authorities are tasked with providing legal aid and assistance to the weak & marginalised sections of the society. 

The post was earlier held by the Supreme Court judge Justice BR Gavai, who was recently appointed as  Executive Chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
