The Delhi High Court on Thursday approved the designation of 85 advocates as Senior Advocates following a Full Court meeting convened to consider the recommendations of the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates.

The decision was taken after the Full Court examined the recommendations submitted by the designation committee, which had assessed the eligibility and merit of candidates in accordance with the criteria governing the conferment of Senior Advocate status under the Advocates Act, 1961, and the principles laid down by the Supreme Court for the designation process.

According to sources, the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates scrutinised a total of 231 applications before forwarding its recommendations to the Full Court for final consideration. Of these, 86 candidates qualified under the prescribed evaluation parameters. The Full Court ultimately approved the designation of 85 advocates as Senior Advocates.

Sources further indicated that 11 women advocates are among those approved for designation.

The Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates comprised Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Justice V. Kameswar Rao, Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre, Delhi High Court Bar Association President N. Hariharan, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma and Senior Advocate Sanjay Jain.

The official list of the 85 advocates who have been designated as Senior Advocates is expected to be notified by the Delhi High Court shortly.
