Former Supreme Court Justice Krishna Murari has been appointed as a member of Vantara’s independent governing council, which will oversee the animal rescue centre’s conservation, rescue and compliance-related work.
Vantara, an animal rescue and rehabilitation centre backed by Reliance Industries, is located in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The governing council has been constituted as an independent body to provide oversight of the centre’s activities and ensure adherence to applicable conservation and regulatory standards.
John E Scanlon AO, former Secretary General of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), was appointed Chairperson of the council in August this year.
Justice Murari brings extensive judicial experience to the council. He studied law at Allahabad University and enrolled as an advocate on December 23, 1981. He began practising at the Allahabad High Court and was appointed an Additional Judge of the court on January 7, 2004.
He was made a permanent judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2005. In June 2018, he was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Justice Murari was subsequently elevated to the Supreme Court and took oath as a judge on September 23, 2019. During his tenure on the apex court, he was part of several Constitution Benches and heard matters involving constitutional, civil and criminal law.
He retired from the Supreme Court in July 2023.
His appointment to Vantara’s governing council comes as the institution continues to focus on wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, conservation and animal welfare. The council is expected to provide independent oversight of these activities, including compliance with legal and regulatory requirements governing the rescue and care of animals.
With Scanlon serving as Chairperson and Justice Murari joining as a member, the council brings together expertise in international wildlife conservation and the Indian judicial system.
