The Gauhati High Court has disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking action against the officers of the Gauhati Municipal Corporation for regularising 500 contractual employees.

The PIL has been filed by one Joydeb Das. In the counter affidavit filed on behalf of the respondent no. 5 (Officer-in-Charge of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Police Station Srimantapur), it is stated that in the matter of regularisation of 500 contractual employees as Regular Employees in Gauhati Municipal Corporation, a preliminary Enquiry has already been initiated at the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti Corruption and the same is in progress.

“In view of the fact that the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti Corruption is already enquiring into the allegation of regularization of 500 contractual employees as Regular Mazdoor in the Gauhati Municipal Corporation, we are of the considered view that no further order(s) is required to be passed in the PIL, however, it is expected that the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti Corruption of the State shall make every effort to complete the preliminary enquiry at the earliest.”

Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi acknowledged the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption’s ongoing preliminary inquiry into the regularisation allegations. The court said it expects the Directorate to expedite the inquiry.
