Manipur High Court directs improving accessibility for people with disabilities, elderly in Churachandpur

26/12/2024BlogNo Comments

The Manipur High Court recently heard a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking directions to make public buildings in Churachandpur District, Manipur, accessible to people with disabilities and the elderly.

The PIL has been filed by the NGO Centre for Community Initiative, who prayed for the provision of ramps and toilets as prescribed under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2017.

The court, comprising Chief Justice D Krishnakumar and Justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui, observed that there was urgency in the matter and directed the State Government to file a report on the actions taken to provide ramps and toilets for people with disabilities and the elderly.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on January 29, 2025.
