Mohammed Shami’s wife approaches Supreme Court seeking ₹10 lakh monthly maintenance

07/11/2025BlogNo Comments

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami’s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, has approached the Supreme Court seeking an enhanced monthly maintenance of ₹10 lakh for herself and their daughter. The top court has issued a notice to Shami in response to her plea.

Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had directed Shami to pay a total of ₹4 lakh per month as interim maintenance of ₹1.5 lakh for Hasin Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh for their minor daughter under the provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. Jahan has now challenged that decision, arguing that the amount awarded does not reflect Shami’s actual income or the standard of living she and her daughter were accustomed to during their marriage.

In her petition, Jahan emphasized that Shami enjoys significant financial success as an internationally recognized sportsperson and has a considerable net worth, reportedly exceeding ₹500 crore. She contends that the current maintenance sum is inadequate given his financial capacity and her responsibility for their child’s upbringing.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Manoj Misra and Ujjal Bhuyan heard the matter and questioned whether the amount fixed by the High Court was insufficient to meet the family’s needs. The Court has now sought responses from both Shami and the West Bengal government before deciding on the matter.

Shami and Hasin Jahan were married in 2014 and have one daughter. Their relationship has been strained since 2018, when Jahan filed complaints alleging domestic abuse and cruelty, leading to multiple legal proceedings over the years.

The Supreme Court’s eventual decision is expected to clarify the balance between financial capability, lifestyle standards, and fairness in interim maintenance awards.
