Congress leader Pawan Khera has approached the Gauhati High Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with a case registered by the Assam Police. His plea follows recent developments before the Supreme Court of India, which declined to continue the interim protection that had earlier shielded him from arrest and advised him to seek relief from the appropriate court in Assam.
The case arises from statements allegedly made by Khera during a press interaction, in which he referred to the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Based on these remarks, the Assam Police filed an FIR invoking several penal provisions, triggering legal proceedings that have now moved across multiple courts.
Before approaching the Gauhati High Court, Khera had obtained temporary protection in the form of transit anticipatory bail from the Telangana High Court. However, that relief did not continue after intervention by the Supreme Court, leaving him to pursue remedies within Assam. His latest petition seeks protection from arrest while the investigation in the matter proceeds.
The development has drawn attention due to both its legal and political implications, particularly regarding jurisdictional questions and the process for securing anticipatory bail in cases involving multiple states. The Gauhati High Court is expected to hear the matter soon, and its decision will determine whether Khera is granted interim relief in the ongoing case.
