The Delhi High Court has indicated that it will determine whether Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra should be permitted to visit her pet Rottweiler, Henry, amid an ongoing custody dispute with her estranged partner, Advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai.
The single-judge Bench of Justice Sachin Datta made these observations on Wednesday while hearing an interim application filed by Moitra seeking immediate visitation rights, asserting that she had been unlawfully deprived of access to the dog.
During the proceedings, the Court remarked that the issue raised in the interim plea warranted judicial consideration and stated that an appropriate order would be passed on the request. The Bench, however, refrained from expressing any opinion on the merits of the underlying dispute.
Moitra’s counsel argued that Henry had been in her care for several years and that continued separation was causing emotional distress to both the petitioner and the animal. It was contended that the interim relief was necessary to preserve the existing relationship pending adjudication of the substantive proceedings.
Opposing the plea, counsel representing the respondent maintained that the dog was presently in his lawful custody and disputed the allegations made in the application. It was further submitted that no case for interim intervention had been established.
The proceedings arise out of a broader legal dispute concerning the custody and ownership of Henry, with both parties asserting competing claims over the pet. The High Court is expected to determine, at this stage, whether interim visitation should be granted while the principal proceedings remain pending.
The matter will now await the Court’s order on the interim application.
