Newly elected Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Pradeep Rai, in an interaction with the Supreme Court Bench, underlined the Bar’s commitment to maintaining a constructive and collaborative relationship with the judiciary, while acknowledging the guidance and institutional support extended by the Court.
Addressing the Bench, Rai said that the guidance of the Judges was “very precious” for the Bar and assured that the Association would abide by such guidance. Describing the Court as a source of institutional mentorship, he said that whenever the Bar faced an issue, the members would approach the Judges with their concerns and place their demands before them at an appropriate forum.
Rai, however, maintained that the occasion was not the appropriate forum to raise the Bar’s demands, while reiterating that the SCBA would extend its cooperation to the Bench.
The exchange then took a lighter turn when Solicitor General Tushar Mehta intervened, observing that the Judges could not necessarily be described as “fatherly figures” and instead drew an analogy from Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) law.
“If I may say on one point, the Lordships are not that old that your Lordships can be a fatherly figure. The Lordships are karta of the HUF,” Mehta remarked.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant responded in a lighter vein, completing the analogy by observing, “We all are coparceners.”
The brief exchange reflected the collegiality that can characterise interactions between the Bench and the Bar, even as the SCBA leadership reiterated its commitment to institutional cooperation.
Rai’s remarks assume significance as he takes charge of the SCBA at a time when the relationship between the Bar and the Bench continues to remain central to the effective administration of justice. His assurance signals an emphasis on dialogue, institutional propriety and constructive engagement, while preserving the legitimate role of the Bar in articulating the professional concerns and interests of advocates.
The exchange also underscored the shared institutional responsibility of the Bench and the Bar in sustaining the administration of justice. While their constitutional and professional roles remain distinct, both institutions remain integral to the functioning of the justice delivery system.
