Supreme Court allows Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for eye treatment

The Supreme Court on Monday permitted Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for three weeks in September for eye treatment.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana passed the order while hearing Banerjee’s appeal against the Calcutta High Court’s refusal to allow him to travel abroad.

The Supreme Court remarked that everyone holds the right to travel abroad and to select their own medical care.

The Court permitted Banerjee to travel on his diplomatic passport for a period of three weeks in September.

The Bench directed him to furnish details of his itinerary, including his foreign address, the doctors or hospital where he would undergo treatment, the duration of his stay and flight details.

The Court said the information provided by Banerjee could be used by the investigating agencies for their purposes but would remain confidential.

The Calcutta High Court had on August 5 rejected Banerjee’s plea seeking permission to travel abroad for eye treatment, following which he approached the Supreme Court challenging the order.
