The Supreme Court Collegium on Monday recommended the name of Madras High Court judge Justice D Krishnakumar for elevation as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

A resolution issued by the Collegium said the appointment would be consequent upon the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul on November 21.

Justice D Krishnakumar, presently serving as a Judge of the Madras High Court, was being recommended for elevation as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur with effect from the date on which the incumbent Chief Justice demitted office on retirement, added the resolution.

Justice Krishnakumar was appointed as a judge of the Madras High Court on April 7, 2016. He is scheduled to retire on May 21, 2025. He is the senior-most puisne judge at the Madras High Court and belongs to a Backward Community.

Before being elevated to the High Court, he had extensive experience in handling civil, constitutional and service matters with specialization in constitutional law.

the Collegium said while recommending the name of Justice D Krishnakumar, it took into consideration the fact that at present there was only one Chief Justice from the Madras High Court among the Chief Justices of the High Courts. Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium was of the considered view that Justice D Krishnakumar was fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, it added.
