Supreme Court denies urgent listing of pleas related to NEET-UG 2026 re-test

The Supreme Court on Friday declined requests for urgent listing of petitions arising from the NEET-UG 2026 re-test scheduled to be conducted on June 21, observing that all matters relating to the examination are already pending consideration before a Bench headed by Justice PS Narasimha.

The issue was mentioned before the Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice V Mohana by counsel appearing on behalf of NEET candidates seeking immediate intervention of the Court.

At the outset, when a petition concerning the NEET re-examination was mentioned for urgent hearing, the Bench observed that all issues connected with the examination had already been assigned to the Justice P.S. Narasimha-led Bench and did not warrant separate urgent listing at this stage.

Subsequently, another counsel mentioned a plea concerning nearly 1,600 NEET candidates and submitted that the students were facing considerable anxiety and uncertainty due to reports circulating on social media and developments in related proceedings before the Delhi High Court concerning the alleged paper leak controversy.

The counsel contended that the students were under immense pressure because of widespread speculation regarding the examination process. It was further submitted that concerns had arisen after observations made during proceedings before the Delhi High Court regarding the circulation of leaked examination material on social media platforms.

Attention was also drawn to alleged difficulties being faced by candidates in accessing their admit cards for the June 21 re-test. The counsel submitted that some candidates were unable to download their admit cards, while others had reportedly received admit cards indicating different examination centres, leaving very little time for students to make necessary arrangements before the examination.

However, the Supreme Court declined to entertain the request for urgent hearing. The Bench made it clear that no separate proceedings would be initiated in relation to the issues raised and reiterated that all disputes concerning the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination would be considered by the Bench already seized of the matter.

When the counsel requested that the plea at least be tagged along with the pending NEET matters so that the concerns of the affected candidates could be addressed, the Chief Justice reiterated that all connected issues would be considered by the Justice P.S. Narasimha-led Bench once it takes up the batch of pending cases.

The Court further observed that various developments relating to the controversy were being discussed across multiple forums and platforms. Nevertheless, it emphasised that all questions concerning the NEET re-test were already pending before the appropriate Bench and would be dealt with in accordance with law when the matters are taken up for hearing.

In view of the above, the Supreme Court declined to grant any urgent relief or order a separate listing of the petitions, leaving the issues raised by the candidates to be considered along with the pending NEET-UG matters before the Justice P.S. Narasimha Bench.
