Supreme Court to hear Meghalaya plea challenging bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi in honeymoon murder case

The Supreme Court will hear on July 21 a petition filed by the Meghalaya government, challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya.

The Bench of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice PB Varale took up the Special Leave Petition filed by the State of Meghalaya on Tuesday and listed the matter for hearing next week.

The State contended in the plea that the High Court erred in extending the relief despite the seriousness of the allegations and the stage of the criminal proceedings.

The case relates to the widely reported murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, who had travelled to Meghalaya with his wife shortly after their marriage. Investigating agencies have alleged that the killing was the result of a premeditated conspiracy and that Sonam Raghuvanshi played a central role in planning and executing the offence.

The prosecution has claimed that the murder was carried out with the assistance of co-accused and has relied on material collected during the investigation to support its case.

The counsel appearing for the State contended that the accusations involved a grave offence punishable with severe penalties and that the High Court failed to adequately consider relevant factors governing the grant of bail in serious criminal cases.
