The Supreme Court on Tuesday announced that it will soon launch a dedicated public information service in Hindi to provide citizens with simple and accessible summaries of important judgments and orders. The announcement was made on the occasion of Hindi Diwas, as the Court seeks to make judicial information more accessible beyond the legal fraternity.
Under the new initiative, selected important judgments and orders of the Supreme Court will be accompanied by easy-to-understand Hindi summaries. The Court will also make available a daily Hindi audio and video bulletin of around 15 to 30 minutes, providing brief updates on significant judicial developments. A link to the corresponding official judgment will also be provided along with each summary.
The initiative is aimed at addressing the difficulty often faced by ordinary citizens and litigants in understanding lengthy and technical legal documents. It is also intended to improve access to judicial information for persons with disabilities and others who may find conventional legal material difficult to read or comprehend.
The Supreme Court said the service would be launched shortly after the necessary arrangements are completed. It will enable citizens to understand important decisions of the Court, their implications and the further legal process in a language that is familiar to them.
The initiative also seeks to strengthen the connection between access to justice and India’s linguistic diversity, by making judicial public information available in Indian languages.
The use of simple language and audio-visual formats is expected to make important judicial developments easier to understand for people who may not have a legal background or who face difficulties in reading lengthy judgments.
The service will initially be available in Hindi, with the Supreme Court planning to introduce it in other Indian languages in a phased manner.
The move is significant against the backdrop of the broader push for greater accessibility of judicial information. While Supreme Court judgments are traditionally drafted and published in English, making simplified summaries available in Indian languages could help bridge the gap between judicial decisions and citizens who may not be comfortable navigating complex legal terminology.
The Court said the phased expansion of the initiative to other Indian languages would allow citizens across different linguistic regions to receive brief, accessible information about important Supreme Court decisions in their own language.
