Supreme Court urges Punjab and Haryana High Court judges to stand firm against pressure tactics from senior bar members

17/06/2026BlogNo Comments

The Supreme Court has advised judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court not to succumb to pressure tactics allegedly employed by certain senior members of the Bar, while emphasising the need to preserve the independence and dignity of the judiciary.

The Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh made the observations while hearing a matter concerning the functioning of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and allegations relating to attempts to influence judicial proceedings through pressure from influential lawyers.

The Court remarked that judges must remain firm and fearless while discharging their constitutional duties and should not allow themselves to be intimidated by any section of the Bar. The Court observed that judicial officers and judges are expected to decide cases strictly in accordance with law and conscience, without yielding to external influence or institutional pressure.

During the hearing, the Apex Court also stressed the importance of maintaining healthy relations between the Bench and the Bar, noting that while lawyers play an indispensable role in the administration of justice, professional disagreements or dissatisfaction with judicial orders cannot justify intimidation or pressure tactics.

The CJI observed that judges should have the courage to uphold the rule of law even in difficult circumstances and cautioned against any attempts to undermine the authority of the courts. The Bench underlined that the independence of the judiciary forms part of the basic structure of the Constitution and cannot be compromised.

The Court’s remarks came in the backdrop of concerns raised regarding the conduct of certain senior advocates and their interactions with judges of the High Court. At the same time, the Bench expressed confidence in the institutional strength of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and reiterated that judges must continue to function fearlessly while ensuring fairness, transparency and adherence to constitutional values.
