On Teachers’ Day, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has announced two institutional initiatives aimed at strengthening legal scholarship and fostering sustained engagement between the judiciary, legal academia and the younger generation of the legal profession.
The Supreme Court is set to commence a Monthly Lecture Series on Law, Justice and Legal Education, with the first edition scheduled for September 2026. The initiative is proposed to follow the theme “One Important Idea. Every Month”, with a distinguished jurist, scholar, legal educationist or domain expert delivering the principal lecture each month.
The initiative is envisaged not merely as a conventional lecture forum but as a continuing institutional platform for the exchange of legal thought and jurisprudential perspectives.
Each lecture will be followed by an “Ideas Dialogue”, providing selected young advocates, law students and researchers an opportunity to engage directly with the principal speaker.
The proposed format seeks to facilitate substantive intellectual engagement rather than restrict the proceedings to a one-way academic address. Participants will be able to raise questions and engage with contemporary issues concerning law, justice and legal education.
The Supreme Court also proposes to professionally record the lectures and prepare edited transcripts and concise Ideas Papers, thereby creating a permanent repository of contemporary legal scholarship.
The proceedings are also expected to be livestreamed, while summaries in Indian languages are proposed to broaden access to the discussions beyond the immediate legal-academic community.
Alongside the lecture initiative, the CJI has proposed instituting the “Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman”, an annual non-monetary distinction intended to recognise distinguished contributions to legal education.
The proposed honour would be conferred around Teachers’ Day each year upon one or two legal educationists whose work has made a notable contribution to the advancement of legal learning.
The inaugural award is expected to follow the first edition of the monthly lecture series.
The proposed recognition seeks to place legal educators within the broader institutional discourse surrounding the administration of justice, acknowledging that the quality of the legal profession and judiciary is intrinsically linked to the standards of legal education and scholarship.
The monthly lecture series is also intended to create an enduring body of legal scholarship accessible to practitioners, students, researchers and members of the judiciary.
By combining distinguished lectures with interactive discussions, recorded proceedings, edited transcripts and Ideas Papers, the initiative seeks to preserve contemporary jurisprudential discourse as a continuing institutional resource.
The proposed structure could also provide young members of the legal profession with greater exposure to leading judicial and academic thinkers, while creating opportunities for meaningful cross-pollination between judicial institutions and legal academia.
The initiatives announced by the CJI underline the importance of maintaining a robust dialogue between the judiciary and institutions responsible for legal education.
Legal education plays a foundational role in shaping future members of the Bar and Bench. A sustained engagement with jurisprudential developments, constitutional principles and emerging areas of law can contribute to a more informed and professionally equipped legal community.
The proposed monthly forum accordingly seeks to institutionalise a space where established legal scholarship can interact with contemporary questions confronting the justice system.
The first edition of the Supreme Court Monthly Lecture Series is scheduled for September 2026, after which an edition is proposed to be held every month.
The initiative, together with the proposed Nyaya Shiksha Samman, marks an effort to establish a continuing institutional tradition centred on legal thought, academic excellence and meaningful participation by the next generation of the legal profession.
