Chief Justice of India Surya Kant issued a clarification on Saturday after widespread outrage over his controversial “cockroach” remarks, asserting that his observations were distorted by sections of the media and were never intended as an attack on India’s unemployed youth.
In the response, the CJI said he was pained by reports suggesting that he had demeaned young Indians struggling with unemployment. He clarified that his criticism was directed specifically at individuals who allegedly infiltrate respected professions using fake and fraudulent degrees, particularly within the legal ecosystem.
The controversy erupted after oral observations made during a Supreme Court hearing were widely circulated online. During the proceedings on May 15, the Bench had expressed concern over what it described as parasites weakening institutions and referred to certain individuals as cockroaches, while discussing misuse of professional platforms, activism, and social media attacks on the judiciary.
However, Justice Kant has now sought to draw a clear distinction between unemployed youth and those allegedly exploiting fake credentials to enter professions such as law, media, and public advocacy. According to the clarification, his remarks were aimed at safeguarding institutional credibility rather than disparaging India’s younger generation.
The Chief Justice further underlined his admiration for India’s youth, calling them the ‘pillars of a developed India,’ and emphasised that the country’s human capital continues to inspire confidence and hope. His statement appears to be an attempt to contain the political and social backlash triggered by the earlier comments, which had sparked intense criticism across media platforms and online forums.
The original remarks were made in the context of a case concerning senior advocate designation and concerns over allegedly dubious law degrees. The Bench had also hinted at the possibility of a deeper probe into the authenticity of qualifications held by certain legal practitioners.
The episode has once again reignited debate over judicial language, institutional accountability, and the widening sensitivity around unemployment and dissent in contemporary India.
