Madras High Court receives four election petitions challenging CM Vijay’s Perambur Victory

03/07/2026BlogNo Comments

The Four election petitions have been filed before the Madras High Court contesting the election of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder C. Joseph Vijay from the Perambur Assembly constituency.

The petitions have been moved by two candidates who lost the 2026 Assembly election from the constituency DMK leaders R.D. Shekar and Dr. Inigo S. Irudayaraj—as well as two voters, T.N. Lakshmi Narasimhan and S. Dinesh. They have sought judicial scrutiny of Vijay’s election, with the High Court expected to examine the maintainability and merits of the challenges in the coming days.

In a related plea, Irudayaraj has also requested the court to restrain the authorities from proceeding with a by-election in the Tiruchirappalli East Assembly constituency until the election dispute is resolved.

Vijay had contested the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East, securing victories in both constituencies. Following the declaration of results, he opted to retain the Perambur seat, necessitating a by-election in Tiruchirappalli East.

According to Election Commission data, Vijay won the Perambur seat with 1,20,365 votes, defeating his nearest rival, R.D. Shekar of the DMK, who secured 66,650 votes. Vijay’s margin of victory stood at 53,715 votes.

The petitions come at a politically sensitive time for the ruling TVK. The party has recently alleged attempts to lure its legislators, after TVK MLA N. Ilaiyaraja claimed he was offered ₹35 crore to vote against the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The allegation triggered a police investigation, with several individuals reportedly arrested in connection with the alleged inducement attempt.

The Madras High Court is expected to take up the election petitions in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, which governs challenges to election results.
