Patna court grants bail to Jan Suraaj leader Prashant Kishor

07/01/2025BlogNo Comments

A Patna court has granted unconditional bail to Jan Suraaj leader Prashant Kishor, who was detained by Bihar police while observing fast-unto-death over irregularities in the Bihar Public Service Commission-70th Combined Competitive Examination.

The single-judge Bench of Arti Upadhyay had initially granted bail to Kishor on a bail bond of Rs 25,000, while directing him to refrain from committing any offences or participating in protests in the future. Advocate Shivanand Giri, appearing for Kishor, sought unconditional bail and refused to sign the bail bond.

The court noted that it lacked the authority to review the order and advised him to approach the High Court if he disagreed with the bail condition.

Kishor was sent to judicial custody. He was later granted unconditional bail by the same court.

On January 2, Kishor began a fast-unto-death to show solidarity with students demanding cancellation of BPSC-70th CCE conducted on December 13, 2024.

The protests were intensified after the government announced a re-examination, which Kishor argued, was an admission of the mistakes that had occurred. A fresh test was conducted at the Bapu Pariksha Parisar center in Patna on January 4 for 12,000 candidates.

As per a press release issued by the commission, only 5,943 candidates attended the examination.
