Prerna Baxi is no more. Wife of renowned legal scholar Prof. Upendra Baxi, Prerna truly lived up to her name, she was an inspiration to him. Their partnership spanned decades and continents, rooted in shared academic pursuits and life itself. She stood by Prof. Baxi through every joy and challenge, an equal companion in all of life’s vicissitudes.
For over six decades, Prema Baxi’s name has appeared, quietly but consistently, alongside that of her husband. Speaking to India Legal some time back she had said: “One quality of Prof. Baxi that has endeared him to me and his friends is his humility and his effort to give respect to everyone. I have imbibed this quality from him.”
In “Letters to Kaka: postcard-images of Upendra Baxi,” a 2018 essay, on which she is credited as co-author she reconstructs her husband’s intellectual formation through the a batch of father-son correspondence. Her involvement reflects a woman who was not just adjacent to Prof. Baxi, but an active and responsible partner in a life built on shared achievements.
Prof. Baxi’s journey took him across continents, Sydney, then Delhi, and later Warwick. Through every relocation, Prerna remained by his side as his strength and inspiration. Her absence will be deeply felt by her husband, as well as by all who knew and worked with her
