A shocking security incident unfolded inside the Supreme Court of India when a lawyer allegedly attempted to attack Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during an ongoing hearing. The advocate reportedly approached the bench, removed his shoe, and tried to throw it toward the Chief Justice while shouting, “Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahenge” (“We will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan”).
Security personnel deployed inside the courtroom intervened immediately, restraining the lawyer before any physical harm could occur. The individual was swiftly escorted out of the courtroom complex as order was restored. Throughout the disruption, CJI Gavai maintained composure and directed the proceedings to continue without interruption. “Do not get distracted by all this. We are not distracted such things do not affect me,” the Chief Justice remarked, choosing to proceed with the scheduled hearings despite the commotion.
Preliminary reports suggest that the outburst was linked to remarks made by the CJI in a recent case involving the restoration of a decapitated idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho. During that hearing, Justice Gavai had commented, “Go and ask the deity itself to do something now… so go and pray,” a remark that drew criticism from certain quarters for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
Following the controversy, the Chief Justice clarified that his remarks were not intended to disparage any faith, reaffirming his respect for all religions. The Union Government, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, also defended the CJI, observing that judicial comments are often misrepresented or exaggerated on social media, resulting in unnecessary outrage.
The attempted assault has prompted serious concern over security measures within the apex court premises, particularly the protocols safeguarding constitutional authorities during live hearings. While no injuries were reported, the breach underscores the need for a reassessment of courtroom access and monitoring systems. Authorities are expected to review the sequence of events and strengthen procedures to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
