The Supreme Court has rejected a petition that sought to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against Attorney General R. Venkataramani. The plea, filed by a petitioner appearing in person, claimed that the Attorney General’s conduct in court amounted to contempt under Article 145 of the Constitution.
A bench comprising Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran briefly heard the matter before dismissing it outright. The Court did not find any basis for the allegations and concluded the hearing with a one-word order: “Dismissed.”
The petitioner had requested the Court to treat Venkataramani’s alleged courtroom behaviour as criminal contempt, but the bench observed no grounds to proceed. Article 145 empowers the Supreme Court to regulate its own procedures and to punish acts of contempt. In this case, however, the Court made it clear that the complaint against the Attorney General did not warrant any further consideration.

The approval was communicated during a hearing before a bench led by Justice Surya Kant, where Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the necessary sanction had been obtained.
