The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has moved the Supreme Court against the exclusion of state government employees from supervisory duties during vote counting, arguing that the move could undermine the efficiency and fairness of the electoral process.
A special bench of Justices P.S. Narasimha and Joymalya Bagchi is expected to hear the matter. In its petition, the party challenged the Election Commission’s directive that mandates the deployment of central government or Central PSU employees as counting supervisors or assistants at counting tables.
TMC contended that state government officials have long been involved in election management and possess the necessary administrative experience to handle counting responsibilities effectively. The party also argued that excluding them without valid reasons may create operational difficulties during the counting process.
The plea comes after the Calcutta High Court upheld the Election Commission’s decision, observing that the poll body has the authority to decide the appointment of personnel for election duties.
Seeking urgent intervention ahead of the counting process, the party urged the apex court to allow eligible state government employees to be assigned supervisory roles to ensure smooth and transparent counting of votes.
